My Population

As I have read more about my population I have learned that a lot of polygamist families that live in the U.S. settle down in places where there are not laws against it, which I always wondered where that was possible because I thought they were getting married illegally. Besides it being illegal almost throughout the U.S. I am struggling with the conflict of whether I believe it is morally wrong or right. Before reading more about my population I definitely thought that it was wrong but as I've read in my book, it gives examples to make you think differently about polygamy, it compares how cheating on your spouse is morally wrong and illegal but it is becoming more in the norm, it happens a lot and wives/husbands forgive one another. I feel as if cheating is one of the most disrespectful things you could do to your spouse and a lot of people refer to polygamy as cheating but if the spouse knows about it and consents to it, is it still disrespectful and wrong to do to them? Those are the kind of questions I am grappling with, so I'd say that reading more is definitely making me question my initial thoughts. A big question that I have about my population is how do the women feel about their husband having other wives, since I am focusing on men having the multiple marriages because it is more popular in society. That will be the next information I want to find out on my population.

  1. Hi Kaitlin,

Thank you for your update about your assumptions, thoughts, and opinions about your population. It sounds like your research is generating more questions, which is its intention!

To answer some of the questions that you have about how women in polygamous relationships feel about their husbands having other wives, what types of resources do you think that you should look for next? What search string(s) would you create?

I look forward to your response!

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum

    1. I think that articles would be the easiest way to find information on what I am looking for or one with an interview because I need more opinions than facts from encyclopedias or Wikipedia. A search string that I would create would be women in Polgamist relationships.
